I want to move somewhere in Latin America, can anybody help recommend a country or organization? |
I'm considering moving to a Latin America country for an indefinite period.
My interests there are:
1) immerse myself in spanish language course (i know a little)
2) get involved in community work (still unsure of what type)
3) possibly teach english to children or utilize my english to gain a job helping others
4) travel within Latin America and enlighten myself
I probably need to work in order to sustain myself (eating, transportation, living expense, etc...). Cheap rent and lifestyle is preferable, along with friendly atmosphere and hospitable people. I have about $8k to start.
Can anybody recommend a city/country that's a good starting point (for a non-spanish speaking person like myself), or a progressive organization to connect with that offers assistance to people in need or english teaching jobs and could establish someone like me? |

why dont you contact voluntray service overseas VSO because they will pay your basics and will put you in touch with their contacts for community work and your place of stay will be organised its a good network of people and safer than going it alone in Latin America
I have been all around Venezuela an amazing experience if well planned if not you will definately be robbed or have difficulties as there is no rail network Merida a town in Andes is amazing it is on two plateaus with bridges linking the town
so if you put VSO in your serch engine you might find yourself being sent to an adventure behond your dreams

The best place for you would be Ecuador. It's very cheap and you can do lots of good by teaching English. There are also many, many volunteer organizations working with the indians in the mountains and the jungle. Lots of Americans and Europeans work there for food, shelter and some spending money. People are extraordinarily friendly.

It was my experience that out of everywhere i traveled in South America, Chile was the nicest. Santiago is very clean and the police are the only ive seen in Latin America that are not corrupt. Its a very Americanized city with beautiful mountain scenery. I thought it was a good mix of culture (where there is more in Peru, Argentina, and Brazil) and safety. |

Honduras is a great place to live, work and teach. It is pretty inexpensive to live there, the people are so hospitable, there is a great need for English teachers, and it's right in the middle of Central America. You can easily travel to the other countries by bus.

Well Venezuela is a very beatiful country, we have diversity of enviroment (landscapes), like beachs, mountains, llanos, etc... Have you heard about Margarita Island? Is a small island in the caribbean sea, is very beautiful and its principal economic activity is Tourism, many people needs to learn english. Also you can come to Puerto la Cruz, here the petrolium is the first business and there is a lot of american and european people working here. We are close to the beach. And the most important, is very cheap to you because our currency is devaluated.

Probably Costa Rica for your initial visit of Latin America because there are so many gringos. Ecuador would be a good start also. Personally I prefer South America over central America
