Your question is hard to answer because it offers no clue to your age (retired or young adventurer), where you intend to live (Central Valley or Beach) or your reason for moving. You might want to post another question.

First tip, bring money - Costa Rica has become almost as expensive as the States. The bargains are dental and medical services and domestic help, not much else.

If you haven't done so, look into residency requirements and get the documents you will need before moving. Apply for residency as soon as you arrive. You can legally stay only three months as a tourist, subject to an extension, but it is a nuisance to extend. Otherwise, you have to leave and reenter the country - an expensive nuisance.

If you plan on living in the central valley, choose the Escasu, Santa Ana area west of San Jose for pleasant weather and abundant amenities.

I have lived in the Central Valley with my wife for the past fifteen years.
