I want to move to ecuador with the wife. Does anyone have any idea what I could do for a living there?

I think starting a business would be a great idea, assuming you have the finances to do such a thing. I lived in Honduras for about 4 years and I know that the market there is so wide open to new ideas. I would imagine Ecuador would be similar. (BTY, I have actually visited Ecuador. It's beautiful!!!)

Think of something you might miss from home and try to implement that into a business idea to take to Ecuador. For example, I missed having good deli sandwiches while in Honduras. So, I have thought I might start a good deli shop if I ever returned there. You could also tap into the tourism market and start a hotel or something on the coast.

Another idea, you could teach English at a school. Latin America is always in need to English teachers, especially those who speak English as their first language.

If you don't need to make money, but just need something to keep you busy, you could get involved at an orphanage or help with home building projects for the poor, etc. There is such a joy in being able to help those less fortunate.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to move overseas and why Ecuador?

It depends on what you like to do. Whoever says there's nothing to do in Quito has no idea what they're talking about. You could:

Own a bar. The prices there aren't too shabby to buy one, and just by offering higher wages for your basic bartenders(average right now is $2/hour..? I think) you'd get a lot of people to work for you. It could be very profitable and interesting.

Teach English. Either in a school (teaching degree? 'Ha!' They'd say, 'what's that?') or give lessons in your home, etc.

Have a hostel. Being a host family wouldn't really work because most travelers who want to stay with a host family decide this because the family would be safe but still authentically Ecuadorian. But a hostel would be basically the same thing only you'd have more travelers and you wouldn't have to cook for people all the time.

I travel to Ecuador alot... I'm half Ecuatorian..... I love it down there... The truth is that you could do almost anything.... The reality is that you don't realy earn much if you work for company.... You may want to look into opening a business down there... the only drawback is that Ecuador has alot of issue's with businesses being held up at gun point. My family down there owns a few restraunts and they do well, but they have been held up many times... It would probably be safer to have some type of business at a strip mall where there is security.

Depends what u have your degree on; It may a bit hard but then again its hard here in the US as well... Perhaps u can open up a business?... Now a days there are a lot of English speaking people there and at any time of the year thousands of tourists vacation there.. Its pretty beautiful there!... Good luck!
