It would be better to go alone than with someone who is undependable. You'll meet many many cool people if you go alone, you'll be able to follow your own schedule, and as long as you keep some common sense about you, be respectful, not be a stupid gringo and you should be fine. Costa Rica is a relatively safe country, and as long as you don't make a spectacle of yourself you shouldn't have any problems. |

I would highly recommend for you to go alone,Costa Rica is a All DAY -ALL NIGHT party place to go, and if your friend is not a responsible person, this kind of environment will get you both in big trouble. Have a nice trip to Costa Rica , you ll have lots to do there, nice people and places, beautiful beaches, very well organized tours.Don't miss water rafting , its a must see, must go, must do.No need to ruin your vacations...GO ALONE!!!!!
GOOD LUCK |

go alone,
you will have much more fun.
the people of costa rica and many of the x-pats living there are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. |

Go by yourself..... I traveled around Australia for 3 months and South America for 9 months on my own and it was awesome.
I also lived in Costa Rica for close to 3 years and Costa Rica is very safe and you will meet a lot of fun people. |

if they are irresponsible then go by yourself or on a package tour.
I took one through europe. the company stuck together students from all over.
you do not want to be going through borders or dealing with authorities with stupid people.
do not mess around when dealing with US homeland security (in charge of all borders now) |

It well worth plucking up the courage and making it on your own. Start ing with the touristy areas will be easiest to meet people. I suggest somewhere like tortugero on the carib coast as a great start, lots of tour companies are based out of there. Another great area is monteverde and the arenal volcano. If you haven't travelled somewhere like this before, monteverde might be a bit daunting and strange to start with, as the locals swam the tourists for cash, services, etc. Thats why i suggest a beach and tropical setting in torteguero first. Once you get more acclimatised, its easy to travel around on the local busses, and the young tourists stick together at the bus stations and help each other figure it out. Dont be afraid to get on a random bus too, then the adventure begins when you try and work out where it is going. Don't use a map, talk to the locals. Most speak some english, but spanish helps alot.
Tamarindo and the north pacific region with require some planning to get to, but also worth it, especilly for beach life.
I have been to CR twice now, each time traveling all round. Just get out if san jose as soon as possible, but thats also a great place once you are more setted with the whole think.
Use the phrase 'pura vida' as much as you can and you will be ok.

i'm actually leaving next month to go by myself and stay for awhile. i think it might not be that bad to have some time to myself and just make friends with people down there. of course i don't know your situation so i can't really offer my advice. i wouldn't see any problem going by yourself though because then you are in control of everything instead of having to count on someone else's lack of responsibility. |
