Well Right Now Costa Rica has two International service airport
It takes between 3 and 7 hours to fly to Costa Rica from most U.S. cities. Most international flights still land in San José's Juan SantamarÃa International Airport Which in in the Capital of the country (airport code SJO). However, more and more direct international flights are touching down in Liberia's International Airport (airport code LIR). Delta, American, US Airways, America West, and Continental have regular nonstop commercial flights to Liberia from their hubs in Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, Phoenix, and Houston, respectively. Liberia is the gateway to the beaches of the Guanacaste region and the Nicoya Peninsula, and a direct flight here eliminates the need for a separate commuter flight in a small aircraft or roughly 5 hours in a car or bus.
Landing in San Jose usually gives you cheaper fares but youre farther away from the beaches and you will have to find a way to them. But No problem you can also include San Jose into your vacation plans
Or fly into San Jose and return Home from Liberia that way you dont backtrack. You dont say where youre traveling from therefore I cant give you any specific answers
Have a Great trip!Costa Rica is a destinations with lots to offer for anyones taste |

yes, the previous person has some good points. liberia (LIR) is closer to tamarindo, the surfing beaches to the south, the turtle beach (playa grande) and etc. it is also very close to monteverde cloud forrest. what you are not close to is corcovado park which is very very far south. you are not close to the orosi valley which i think is very beautiful and the volcano arenal is about equal distant (same with monteverde) the other volcano irazu' is also closer to san jose.
what to do...what to do......
fly into San Jose (SJO) and fly home from Liberia (LIR)
near SJO, take some trips to maybe, the orosi valley or a volcano or something....then see what you really wanted to.....monteverde/santa elena (and lake arenal) is a cloud forrest (must see)....rincon de la vieja is a dry rainforrest. it is dry half of the year, but still has some cool stuff (extinct volcano, hot springs, a cool lodge to stay.) my friends have privately owned land inside the park which is near north of the lodge.
the heavy rainforrests are on the carribean side and near corcovado which is where the scarlet macaws are. they are away from where you want to be, but you can take a quick trip to some jungle areas near the carribean side if you plan it...
the beaches are all up and down the nicoya peninsula in guanacaste. there are some others south of puntarenas, but better are the ones on the peninsula.
if you find yourself way down south on the peninsula, take a ferry across the water and back to San Jose and fly home (start in LIR and end in SJO).
the roads are increadably curvy and they are not really freeways that get you there fast (especially in guanacaste) and the monteverde roads are all NOT paved. SOOOO
the idea of into one airport and out of the other is very appealing.
if you can live with only seeing monteverde/santa elena and the lake area around arenal....then go to all the beaches...liberia (LIR) is the way to go. it is not far from the sometimes active volcano arenal, and you can consider "rincon de la vieja" too.
good luck |

If you want to land closer to the beaches go to Liberia. |

go to Liberia airport, is close to the beach, the other airport is in the middle of the city, no beaches or rainforest is close to that one. have fun, i am from Costa Rica. |

Whatever you do, make sure to go to the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica -- the other side is horrible (scary). |
