I wanto go to Latin America this summer, but WHERE should i go/stay? |
i am currently a senior in High School and i long to explore the world. I am quite drawn to Latin America and i really want to learn Spanish. I know the only way i can learn Spanish is thru total immersion. i have taken French all my life, but i am a quick learner.
I have NO idea where to go, which counrty that is. I was pretty set on Buenos Aires, Argentina. BUT I HAVE NO IDEA! i wouldn't mind going to Europe and going to Spain for the summer, but I KNOW I WANT TO GO TO A SPANISH SPEAKING country.
perhaps i could intern or work, i dont really just want to "relax" the whole time i'm there.
I am very politically motivated and i LOVE culture. In University i am majoring in political science and studying international diplomacy. i am very inspired by Che Guevara (if this any of this helps...for picking my destination that is...)
well please tell me where the best place to pursue my goals, any suggestions would be much appreciated!!
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! |

There are a lot of places you could go and have fun. Most major latin destinations will have spanish schools with homestays for you to get your total immersion. I know Quito Ecuador has a TON of schools, as does Lima Peru. Antigua Guatemala is a beautiful colonial town with literally dozens of small language schools, all with homestays.
One place that might be RIGHT up your alley is in the Peten jungles of Guatemala, not far from the magnificent Mayan ruins of Tikal. They're big on the ecological and community volunteer projects, so you could get your Che Guevara fix too. $120 a week includes your spanish lessons, room, all meals, and even a pickup from the airport. Take a look at their web site: http://www.volunteerpeten.com |

Well if you don't know where to go, I would surely recommend Colombia.
This would be the greatest place because it has a vast variety of culture and people.
If you want to see the old and classic arquitecture go to Europe
If you want to see the Caribbean go to Cuba
If you want to see the Pacific go to Chile
If you want to see the Andes go to Ecuador
If you want to see the Amazonian jungle go to Brazil
If you want to see the Precolumbian cultures go to Peru or Mexico
But if you want to see ALL OF THESE together in one country, without spending much, go to COLOMBIA!!!
Need more reasons???
The best variety of exotic animals, fruits and flowers
Best production of coffee, emeralds, exportation of goods,
great, beautiful, and cheerful women,
Intelligent and talented people,
All the climates you want, snow, tropical, hot, cold, mild, sand, warm, tempered.
If you need any more reasons just add me, have a LOT more, just don't have time to number them all.

Hi! For all the things you have written, I recommend you to go to Peru, it is a wonderful place, its people are friendly, and they are ready to help you at anytime, its past & present is amazing, you will have the chance to know of the most important ancient cultures, The Inca Empire, and all its legacy.
There are places that you should visit such as Cuzco (Machu Picchu), Arequipa (Colca Canyon), Puno (Titicaca Lake), Huaraz (adventure sports), National Park Manu (Cuzco - Madre de Dios), and of course, Lima where you will find a perfect mix between the past, present and future.
Peruvian food is simply delicious, it is considered on the Top 5, and it has a great variety of plates from the different areas (coast, highlands, jungle), also you can taste its typical drinks (pisco sour), and desserts.
And if you are interested in learning Spanish, Peru is the right place to learn it, as Peruvian people speak Spanish in a good way, with no special pronunciation, and clear & comprehensive rules. You will find there good institutes, and private teachers.
Good Luck To You!
All The Best
Bye Bye |

I agree that Peru would be a great choice. Lima is easy to navigate and still relatively cheap to live in and explore. The public transportation system is really inexpensive if you can get someone to help you know which bus to take. You can get a nice family run hotel for $15-20/night! There is SO much history even just in Lima alone as it was the seat of the Spanish Viceroyalty. There are catacombs from the Inquisition, etc etc. Plus you could easily get to Cuzco to see Macchu Picchu (Che Guevara visited there). There is so much to see and learn about the Incas and their resistance to the Spanish. There has been a lot of recent political/social activity there (i.e. Sendero Luminoso, etc). Go to Peru! You will not regret it. |

All those other places are great, but I personally recommend Buenos Aires, Argentina. It's a great city with its own unique flavor and culture. There are lots of museums, art galleries, concerts and beautiful architecture and history, if that is your thing. You can go to a tango show, a soccer game, skydiving or just walk along the beautiful Rio de la Plata. It is only a short local flight away from some of the most incredible natural wonders of the world, including Tierra del Fuego and the Iguazu waterfalls. Also, BA boasts the best nightlife in Latin America (and the world?) with bars and clubs that don't shut down until well past the sun comes up.
I've traveled around most of South America and Europe, and BA is still my favorite place to go. There is a reason why some many people who come here to visit end up staying for some much longer! |
