The cost really is about the same as in the USA.

A descent hotel is $70-100 US dollars... really nice hotels are more, dumps are less....

You can get a serious dump on the beach for as little as $10 per night.... descent room on the beach for $80-100 per night... and 4 or 5 start hotel for hundreds of dollars per night.

For colonas, just multiply those numbers by 520... you can just use dollars though.

Well, it is certainly possible to visit Costa Rica and spend a lot of money, but you can also get by at reasonable or even cheap prices if you want. When I was there back in '02, I usually spent $5-10 a night at hotels- nice, clean attractive places, but no AC or cable. San Jose if I recall was a bit pricier but not super high. You could go to the bookstore and thumb through a guidebook to get an idea of what prices would be in your range.

In comparison to other Latin American countries, Costa Rica is a bit more expensive than its dirt-cheap neighbors, but not more expensive than say northern Mexico.

Costa Rica is the country to where there go the tourists that it does not reach them to travel to the islands of the Caribe, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela. It is a destination of the second hand

I LIVE IN CENTRAL AMERICA

Well, first of all I have to ask you why you are staying in San Jose. It is not safe to go out there at night as the drug problems are very evident. During the day there is a few museums to visit and a central market area to peruse but thats about it.

Hotels in San Jose can be a little more expensive than other areas of the country. Tranquilo backpackers is a good safe and cheap bet and they have a pool. It is about $10 - $12 per night there.

Most areas of the country are still relatively affordable compared to the USA however this country is much more expensive when compared to the majority of Central America.

Food can be purchased for as little as $20 per day if you stick to real typical restaurants and not too Americanized establishments. Beer is about 1.50 to $2 (700 - 1000 colones) Currency translation right now is about 500 colones to $1 American.

Check out this site to learn more about different areas of the country that may be more appealing to you.
Have fun

Truth
If you pay in American dollars it will be more.
I have heard you can get a decent hotel for $7 a day, but I have never stayed in a hotel there. Food and such things are comparable to the US.

Costa Rica is an expensive as you want it to be. Hotel rooms can range from $35 to $1000 a night. That said, you need to think about why you're traveling down and what it is you want to experience.

Staying in San Jose for all 7 days is a mistake. Fly into San Jose if you must, but Liberia is a much better choice because it's less congested and it's in Guanacaste - the nicest part of the country.
