If I were to go somewhere like Guatemala for a week or 2, would it help me become fluent in Spanish quicker?

I bought Rosetta Stone and am on level 2, and am stydying every night. I just figured going someplace like that might help expedite the process! My biggest issue is understanding people when they speak in Spanish. Thought going to Guatemala might help that too. I'd be staying with a Hispanic friend's family, where they obviously all speak Spanish. Can't stay longer than 1 to 2 weeks though. Don't want to go if that short of time won't be of much help in helping me to be able to converse in Spanish better. Thanks!

I just think that is too short a time. Your ears really need to get retrained to HEAR Spanish. Watch the Spanish channels on tv, get in a local class, converse with Spanish speakers...listen to cd's......and wait till you can go for longer visit.

absolutely. I knew a little spanish before going over there and I learned much faster by just talking to people there. I got to warn you though, you're not going to want to leave.

Su
yes because you can't speak any other languagge but spanish so yeah you will speak it fast

Absolutely 2 weeks in Guatemala could help you - IF you put in the time. One-on-one lessons can be incredibly helpful, and then you'd have to make an effort to speak as much Spanish with your host family as much as possible... if you can't handle serious conversation yet, say inane things (I like dogs, it's cloudy today) if you have to, just keep talking and keep studying. Make the most of it and it will help a lot.

YES! don't worry too much about fluidity, but get your key survival phrases down like

Puedes hablar mas lento por favor? (can you speak more slowly please)

Adonde esta el bano? (where is the bathroon)

Tengo habre. (I'm hungry)

Tengo sed. (I'm thirsty)

Tengo que usar el bano, (I have to use the bathroom)

Ayuda (help)

Adonde esta la Embajada de los estados unidos? (Where is the US embassy)

No hablo el espanol muy bien. (I don't speak spanish very well)

Alguein habla ingles? (anyone speak english)

well it will help you but like most people said.. its to little time. and all countries have different ways of speaking spanish. in country it could mean one thing and in another it could mean another thing. so you will learn how to speak guatemalan spanich, which is similar to spanish from honduras, and belize which have the same culture, or abotu the same culture. youll have fun though, tahst all taht matters... i envy you lol. go to puerto barrios, you will have fun and you wont believe your eyes, there are a lot of natural waterfalls, rivers lakes that will blow your mind, also try goign to los siete altares! you will never see water like that anywhere else!! just be careful

I agree with 'charlie the rabbit'.Although any amount of time spent studying one on one such as in Guatemala will help you,one or two weeks is just not enough time to warrant the expense of a trip there. Save your money and go to GTE. when you can spend a month or six weeks there. In the meantime continue with your Rosetta Stone Program(I know at least one school in Quetzaltenango teaches from the Rosetta Stone program).
It is not easy learning a second language .Keep up the good work with your RS program for now and save your money for a great vacation in Guatemala.Listen to Spanish on the radio watch Spanish programs on TV,read Spanish Language news papers and books (even kids books) everything helps.
