Hola!

Comida Guatemalteca is delightfully different from other latin american countries because the most popular bean is the black bean, one of the highest in protein and flavor, served either whole when cooked with garlic and onion "parados" or more popularly liquefied in a blender and served as a thick liquid "collados", or then sauteed in onions and served re fried "volteados".

Also unlike most other countries, Guatemala is the land of El Hombre de Maiz, corn rules and corn tortillas are usually hand made and cooked on a clay surface "comal". Corn is even served roasted over open charcoal and corn tamales are soft and succulent, almost like a mush with bits of meat and vegetable! Guatemalans love barbecue, especially beef, and have several exquisite and complicated dishes such as Pepian (pork,ribs/brown chili and spices sauce), Jocon (chicken/green sauce) or Hilachas (beef/red sauce).

Guatemala city has a lot of disco and night clubs where you can find every type of modern music. Arjona is one current recording artist from Guatemala.

You are going to love Antigua! In general do hang out around the central plaza with it's fountains, benches and very old trees, surrounded by colonial buildings, bars and restaurants. there is where you will find the sellers of the "Tipica', clothes and hand woven articles, and so many different kinds of people, locals and tourists. For food, do visit the restaurants called Dona Luisa Xicotencatl or La Fonda de la Calle real. If you like hiking and scenery, climb the Volcan De Agua and spend the night on top, or visit the Mariposario de Jocotenango, five minutes away.

Buena Suerte!

Visit Antigua, Quetzaltenango (Xela), Tikal and most definately San Marcos la Laguna (Atitlan)
I don't know your taste in food. Definately try Pollo Campero, go to Tecpan for steak, my favorite place there is called RincĂłn Suizo. Also try dobladas and tamales in antigua at a place on Primera Avenida, close to Alameda Santa Rosa, ask around its not hard to find. For a more fancy food try Panza Verde(also in Antigua).
For daytrips or more organized tours call Cecilia at National Travel Agency in Antigua, they are helpful. 78328383

For Food:
Cak Ick - Spicy Soup
Tortilla Soup
Tamales - Guatemala makes their own kind, very tasty
Carne Asada with Black Beans, guacamole, tortillas and a bottle of Gallo Beer (the best combo)

To See:
Tikal - Mayan archaeological site in the northern part of the country. Also visit other sites such as Yaxha (pronounced Yah-Sha)
Antigua Guatemala - Colonial Spanish style city, former capital of the country.
Xhetulul - In Totonicapan, an amusement park and water park. All new and very nice.
Puerto Quetzal - Nice fun in the sun at a black sand beach
Coban - Nice mountain retreat
Quetzaltenango - Another nice mountain town
Guatemala City - Nightclubs, Palacio National, restaurants.

Just avoid eating anything from roadside stalls due to disease and sickness.

Guatemalan food is based on corn and beans.

You better go to Antigua (try a rest called Nicholas) and go to Petén and Atitlán lake.

nokkie
no idea, ive never been there. but i will suggest to u, go to the bar, club or disco take a guatemala girl and taste it. thats more interesting.

Mr. Lou Zerr
Visit Quintenznanga. Stop in the little tobacco shop on the corner of main and ask for Pedro, tell him Juan sent you. Try the french fries. They're to die for.
