If my cellular is unlocked, can I purchase a SIM card in Costa Rica?

I've purchased SIM cards for my unlocked AT&T phone before in Europe, but is it done the same way in Costa Rica? Can I just buy a SIM card with my own number and fill it with minutes? If so, where can I purchase it?

ICE - (Costa Rica cell phone monopoly), as of now does not have the International SIM card (what you would need to use your phone) to be used in CR. Now rumor has it, they will have "some" SIM cards, but for what phone, I do not know.

Your best bet is to rent a phone. Costs are fairly reasonable and you will not have the hassles.

Mission Impossible;

Sim cards are only available through the Government owned cell provder I.C.E and you must have a cell phone account set up to get one.

You'd need to have Costa Rica residency to open a phone account or own a Costa Rican Corporation. The wait time for a SIM card once you have met the requriements is painstaking as you have to order one, and then wait about 3 months to get it.

Hopefully soon, the government will allow other cell service providers to offer service in Costa Rica, and put an end to I.C.E's monopoly, and horrible service and policies.

You can try RebeFone (link below), they have International SIM cards for Europe and rest of the World:

To get a sim card you will need to get a phone line or rent one from someone who has one.
For now there are no sim cards available.
