Mr. Q

If you've seen most of Central America, what was your favorite country?

I'm going with my family for Christmas this year but only have time/ energy to do one country. What do you suggest and why? Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize? Any place I should avoid?

I've been to Belize, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.
Belize was my favorite, and here's a bit about my last trip:
We split our time between the islands & inland. We spent a few days on Caye Caulker, and a few days in San Ignacio.
Caye Caulker is an amazing little laid back island, many of the buildings have sand floors and you can eat all meals in your swimsuit if you want :-) There are guided snorkle and dive trips that leave from the Caye. We stayed at the Rainbow Hotel, which was pretty basic, cheap and clean.
Some people choose Ambergis Caye for the island portion of their vacation, but it is a little more "commercialized" than Caye Caulker. I personally feel you get a better island experience at Caye Caulker.
San Ignacio however, was my favorite few days of the trip. There are amazing Mayan ruins nearby to see. We stayed at the Maya Mountain Lodge. They were able to arrange day trips for us from canoing down the Mopan River, to go swim at the Blue Hole National Park (different than the blue hole dive area off the coast). They arranged transportation from the airport for us, so we didn't even need to rent a car.
We did one overnight trip into Guatemala to the Tikal National Park. (A bus takes you there, and it was very easy.) It was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. We climbed to the top of one of the temples before sunrise, and watched the sun come up through the mists over the tree canopy. We could see the tops of the other temples rising above the mist and hear the howler monkeys in the trees around us.
Also, the food was AWESOME everywhere we went, and we didn't have to be too careful about what we ate (like you might have to in Mexico), just watched the water we drank in public places (bought bottled).
The people in Belize are all english speaking, and very friendly.
Hope this info helps!

Honduras is my home so of course it is my favorite. It's a toss up between Guatemala and Nicaragua for second place. These three offer the most diversity in geography, culture and visitor attractions. Belize is my least favorite (super expensive and commercialized) and all the others fall somewhere in between. No, you don't need to avoid any of them. They are all worth a visit.

I live in Central America and have visited each country. My favorite in each and every way would be my native Nicaragua, where i currently reside. Honduras would be my second favorite. All countries have places you should avoid but that is outnumbered by all the places you shouldn't avoid. I would suggest Nicaragua for Christmas. Reason being is that it is very cheap and safe. During Christmas there are a load of festivities taking place all around the country.

Belize is the country you here is some infro:
Often referred to as Mother Nature's best kept secret Belize has so much to offer everyone . Located on the east coast of Central America, on the Yucatan Peninsula, this beautiful country runs less than 200 miles in length and is only 68 miles wide . Being just the right size Belize offers visitors the opportunity to do it all. No matter what direction you head in an adventure awaits you. for the water sports fanatic there is eastern Belize, western Belize for those seeking jungle explorations, Belize's north for the wetlands and viewing its diverse bird and wildlife populations, and the mountains of southern Belize for the avid hikers and those interested in panoramic views. Become an amateur archaeologist; visit glorious water walls and gaping caves; snorkel, dive, or fish ' The Great Barrier Reef of the Americas', or simply come and ease yourself into the laid back, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere of what can only be considered PARADISE.
