Santiago is a great capital to visit, and there's lots to see and you're not going to miss anything you love back home. The only problem is that in summer you'll feel more the smog (kind of like Los Angeles but LA has the advantage of being in the coast).

If it's summer time (December-March) you have to go to the beach. Viña del mar is the most attractive place, full of teenagers, discoteques, the International Music Festival in febuary. Next to Viña is the main port and pictoric-boheme city of Valparaiso. Nearby to the north you have exclusive beaches like Zapallar, Cachagua and pintoresque beaches like Maitencillo & Horcon. To the near south you have the exclusive Quintay, then the beach towns of Algarrobo and Isla Negra.

Also in the summer time, the best to see in Chile is the southern part, from Concepcion to Chiloe Island. Beautiful landscapes with blue skies, Lakes and white top volcanoes. An other treat during the summer is the seasonal fruits, like peaches, plums, apples, oranges, cherries, grapes, pears, grapefruits, strawberries, blueberries etc. etc.

In the winter its great to go skying near Santiago

Vina del Mar is pretty and so is Valparaiso and both are not that far from Santiago. I've traveled through the north twice, on two separate trips that lasted for like 7days-11 days and theres not much to see in my opinion..I've traveled by bus all the way from Santiago to the very tip of Chile to the city called Arica which borders Peru. The north is pretty much all desert. The only town that I've found very pretty and enjoyable both times was Iquique.

I would go to the South, to like Apunta Arenas which is close to Antartica. There is lush green and peguins and stuff like that.
I didn't get a chance to go so far down south so I hope I will be able to go in the future.

The nature is beautiful down there...and I would go to Easter Island ( Isla de Pascua) . It is an entirely different culture than Chile but still owned technically by Chile; they even speak a different language other than Spanish.

See the nature. Visit the capital. There are beautiful mountains lush with trees in South America. And a visit to the beach.
