Antigua - beautifully maintained colonial town, crafts.
Lake Atitlan -gorgeous volcanic lake/ surrounding villages.

Quetaltenango - Another high lands city with much acitivity.
Tikal - Mayan ruins in the jungle North of the country.

1. Lake Atitlan: it is very beautiful. Great scenery!
2. Panajachel: it is right by Lake Atitlan and there are many stalls selling handicrafts. I enjoy shopping for crafts. I enjoy haggling over prices. This is an art and I am good at it. You cannot haggle at some stores but you can, at markets and stalls like these on the streets.
3. Tikal: The Tikal National Park is a "piece of Mayan History".
There are also forest trails in there where you can see wildlife: flora and fauna of Guatemala.
4.Guatemala City: this is the capital and there are buildings reflecting Guatemala's past.
5.The coastal area of Guatemala: see the beaches there and enjoy the view.

I'd check out the 15 or 20 Guatemala online videos at http://www.atitlan.net for a good overview of the country, then decide for yourself.

Quetzaltenango - best place to live and learn Spanish. Beautiful scenery, lots of things to do, good night life.

Panajachel - right on Lago Atitlan, easy access to the various communities around the lake.

Tikal - the biggest and best Mayan ruins in Central America, lots of wild animals, zip line, amazing history and architecture.

Antigua Guatemala - used to be the capital, cobblestone streets, lots of spanish style architecture (wouldn't stay too long though). Very touristy.
