I'm a little surprised at SOME of the answers you've gotten so far. Depending on what time you arrive, you may be tired from the trip, and do stay (maybe one day) at a hotel near the airport to rest and refresh. The most reasonable rate I found near the airport was at "bbmilleniumcr.com" They have free pick-up from the airport if you e-mail them or call them on the phone. The name of the airport, near San Jose, by the way, is Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santa Maria (SJO) and it is in Alajuela. That airport is NOT SO BUSY that you have to worry about noise.
Then head out to, what I recommend, the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica. It is beautiful, full of different activities. a variety of prices and styles. I personally have liked horse-back riding (with breakfast and lunch included) at Cataratas Nauyaca near Dominical for around $40 (it's worth it). But you do need reservations and they start the tours at about 7 or 8 AM.
I've had good luck renting cars from Alamo/National.
I like Manuel Antonio area.
Other than that, Have fun. I know you'll enjoy Costa Rica!
(USE COMMON SENSE in guarding your valuables as in any other major city in the world.) There are good and bad places as anywhere else. But Costa Ricans are very friendly!

Forget about those kidnappers, thats BS... there is no such thing... Costa Rica is very well developed country and has lot attention for tourists. Beaches are amazing and downtown is very near airport any way. Enjoy your trip

hmm look on yahoo travel.

i know that's not a very good answer but it really helped me on my cancun vacation.

The airport is in the boonies. San Jose, for that matter, is a long way from the beach. Not much of a downtown, but a little shopping and stuff.

There are lots of neet things to do, and companies, ready to put you on a tour. It is a great country for travel.

When I went to Costa Rica we stayed at a very nice hotel in San Juan. It was very conveniently located. We could walk to the beach which was absolutely beautiful! or take a cab to other attractions straight from the hotel. And the view was amazing!!!
Costa Rica is a beautiful place, enjoy it!

You would probably have a better time in places further away from downtown and the air port. Maybe like one day there, but the most beautiful places there are areas like Tortuguero, Arenal and Monteverde. You should look into those places, I just went to them and it was amazing.

well for this reasons (kidnapped and by the airport lots of drug dealers and loud noise from airport) means you can not even leave your country no matter where you are from.
however you can stay at Trapp Family Country Inn
www.trappfamilycountryinn.com
or hotel villa dolce
www.hotelvilladolce.com

I'm tico, and I recommend you to stay on any city or town, really, near the airport there're not a lot of things to do, but in San Jose, you have a lot of places you can visit. If you like beach, try Jacó or Herradura, they are the nearest to Alajuela International Airport

In San José, you can do a lot of stuff, from visiting parks and museums, to buy a lot of things in downtown or any mall.}

Good Luck on your trip and HAVE FUN!!!
