...just beware, the altitude is very high, about 9200 feet. So move slow and drink lots of water or you can start to feel really sick! It takes a day or two to acclimate so if you only have a day keep your activities kind of mellow.
Quito is a nice city with lots of churches and museums and is very nice to walk around in. The main square is very pretty. Stay in the new town though, which is safer and has better hotels and restaurants. And be careful at night. We didn't have any problems but we heard lots of stories.
The lonely planet link someone gave you should be really good to plan your day.
Have a great trip!
EDIT: We really liked the equator stuff too. The equator monument is cool, and there's an outdoor museum nearby at the actual GPS location of the equator that is a lot of fun. |

I know that hiking would be very possible since there are tons of mountains in Quito. I've also been to the equator - it's called midal de mundo. Pretty cool place to see! |

Well, you could do Lot's of things. You could go to the bathroom, there is always the daily iguana spear fishing contest, a blue headed booby shoot, among other great things (bag limit 3 per person). Finding unique ways to destroy the environment is also at the top of my list. Hope you have fun. |
