loaf of sliced bread: more or less 1000 colones
gallon of milk: a litter cost 380 colones. we don't sell milk in gallons.
2 liter of soda (coca cola): hmmm 900 colones
and... for the big mac index: a regular-sized big mac combo ( with frites and coke): 2900 colones |

For your reference:
US$1 = 560 Colones
A Loaf od Sliced Bread = 1000 colones, maybe more. That depends on the brand and size.
A gallon of milk: The available size for milk is 250ml, 1 liter and 1.8 liters.
1 liter = 400 colones
2 liter of soda (coca cola or similar products: pepsi, fanta, sprite, 7up, squirt, or mexican products big cola) are about 900 colones.
You can fill up a entire supermarket shopping cart with $200. And that food can last up to 2 months.
I lived some time ago in NY. Let me tell you that food in Costa Rica is really cheaper than in USA.

A loaf of sliced bread costs anywhere from $1.50 to $2.00. Milk in Costa Rica isn't sold by the gallon. It is sold by the liter. A liter is around .80 cents for whole milk, while fortified mild costs around $1.50 per liter. Multiply that by 3.785, which is how many liters are in a gallon, and you get from $3.00 to $5.67 for a gallon of milk. I don't buy soda, but a 2 liter bottle of fruit juice is around $2.00. Food can be quite expensive in Costa Rica, especially prepackaged food. Fresh fruit is rather inexpensive. A banana costs less than .05 cents. A pineapple can cost around one dollar, even less. You can buy 2 pounds of mangoes for one dollar. Gasoline is around $4.50 a gallon. I hope that gives you an idea about prices here.
