If you're comming to Lima, wheather is cool in May (some say that this year we are going to experience a pleasant winter with sunny days) although the temperature doesn't fall as much as it does in the US, there's a 80-90% humidity and it's wise to cover up in the night (specialy your neck with a scarf), just bring clothes you would use in the fall for the night time.

Lima is a big city and you can get anything you need, we got KFC, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Burger King, Mc Donalds, GTI Fridays, Tony Roma's, Starbucks, Benihanna's, Shopping Malls, and many Super Stores and Pharmacies. It depends on where you're stayng.

Some people come to work in the outskirts of Lima and it's a totaly different ballgame. Nothing of the mention are found there, and the main reason is that the poorest people in Lima can't afford it. If that's your case, be sure to get all your supplies everytime you go to a commercial neighborhood.

You can also go visit some of the Craftwork Markets in the Miraflores Neighborhood, you can get pretty nice hand made Inka style sweters gloves and hats, and they're not expensive.

Did you know that from May 13-17, there's going to be a Latin America - European community Summit in Lima? Many presidents are going to visit us at the time, so the local goverment created a holyday on thursday 15th and friday 16th (no school) so that most of the people would leave the city and make it easier to control.

If you go to the mountains you'll need coat, it's sunny in the day but at night it gets cold.

I Â´m peruvian and I live in Lima.
By May probably is gonna be stil a little hot at noon, But just be sure to bring pants and light sweaters for nights.
If you donÂ´t need to bring a laptop..better. I mean if you are coming for leissure,,there are internet cafes almost every corner, specially in Cusco, Arequipa and Puno. In Lima too, and is very cheap. About $ 1.00 an hour.
Are you hiking? if so, be prepared because you might find sports articles pricy.
Are you coming from the US? cause the exchange rate is going down. Right now is S/. 2.85. per dollar.

Its really not that cold, you will need to bring warm clothes, but not like you're going to Alaska. I'm Peruvian, so i know what its like down there. Just know, if its summer in the U.S, its winter in Peru. The sun never shines in the winter, its more like an overcast, its depressing, but the coldest it gets is like mid/low 50's.

But, when you go there, you have to see Machu Pichu!! It is beautiful!!

Have you checked with your doctor about whether you need any vaccinations? Some of them have to be done a certain amount of time before you go. And if you're on any medication or have any long-term condition, you may need a letter from the doctor saying you're fit to travel and listing your medications. And I'd definitely recommend travel insurance - if you don't get it, you just know something will happen!

Me too, well, I'm going in July for research!

I was told that it was warm, usually sunny and very windy.
I would take shorts and pants, and sweaters too.
And a hat and sunscreen if you're fair skinned.

it depends where your are going...peru has mountains, jungle and coast. i was on the northern coast last october and it was pretty nice and sunny.

I went to Peru last year for the last week of April and the first two weeks of May.

In Lima and the other sea level cities, it'll usually be very comfortable...around 75 degrees roughly. It gets a bit cool in the evenings.

If you go to places at higher altitudes like Cusco or Puno/Lake Titicaca it gets much colder, especially at night. You should probably have a light jacket on hand if it is cool during the days (although it will usually still be warm enough for jeans and a tshirt), and at night be prepared for it to get quite cold...into the 40s. If you stay at budget hotels they usually don't have heat, I found I needed to wear socks and pajamas in addition to the plenty of blankets supplied by the hostels I stayed in. On the coldest nights I also used a sleep sheet, which is kind of like a sleeping bag made out of cloth the thickness of a sheet. It just holds in a bit more warmth.

So overall, jeans and a tshirt will serve you well when it's sunny. At night it does get cold so be prepared for that.

There isn't anything special you need to bring really, just your camera. You might want to find a travel clinic and ask about vaccinations. If you stick to the most popular areas (Lima, Cusco, etc) you probably don't need any. If you get off into the jungle or amazon river areas (Iquitos for example) there are quite a few vaccinations they'll give you. I personally got Hep A, Hep B, DPT, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever, plus malaria pills.

The water in Peru can often upset people's stomachs. You can get a prescription from your doctor for Xifaxan which is a potent medication to treat traveller's diarrhea. I'm told it will take effect in just a few hours in most cases. If you only drink bottled water you probably wont get sick, but you'll always be getting a bit of it from vegetables and whatnot so there is always some risk.

Altitude sickness is also common. Lima is a sea level and Cusco is around 12,000 feet (only a 1 hour flight) and Lake Titicaca is even higher. So you do make dramatic altitude changes sometimes. Plan on a day or two of limited physical activity when you go to altitude to give your body time to adjust. You might also want to ask your doctor for a prescription for Diamox, which if you take a couple days in advance will aid your altitude acclimatization.
