Ummm.. not exactly sure what you're asking, but my friend and I backpacked through Belize and into Guatamala. Public transportation (busses) were good. My favorite place we stayed was at Maya Mountain Lodge, link attached.
I've been to Costa Rica, not backpacking though, but I would definitely do it. That whole area of Central America rocks, the food is awesome, people are friendly and speak english, and the scenery/jungle is AMAZING! |

In colombia look up Villa de Leyva. Its a safe area with mountains, desert and a lot of hiking and eco tour stuff. |
