Is $3000 a decent price for a class trip to Costa Rica?

It is 8-9 days long.
We would go to hot springs, San Jose, the Monteverde cloud forest, and take a horseback ride trip to a smaller village. We also get to have free days and I think we go swimming. Is it worth the money? I really want to go, but it's pricey. I'm in high school, but not old enough to have a job, so my parents would have to pay most of it...

It seems to me that your trip is a bit pricey. It is about $1,000 over what it should cost. It's 8 or 9 days. If you go to an all inclusive hotel and you are staying 3 or 4 to a room, which you usually do on class trips, then it is a bit high. If I were you, I would investigate a bit more. Find out what hotels you will be staying in and then go to the hotel web page to see what the rates are. If you were to do the trip on your own, you could do it for less, depending on where you stay.
Like I said, all inclusive is the way to go. If you stayed at an all inclusive resort and came down with three friends, you would end up paying around $120 per night. That's $960. You can fly from Miami to Costa Rica for around $600, figure $500 for souvenirs and incidentals, and you are at $2060.
You can find good airline deals online to. It depends on how much time you want to spend doing the necessary research. I have included links to two decent all inclusive hotels. Check them out. For my money, I would go to Barcelo. I have, in fact, and it's great.

If you need more information about Costa Rica, try the TicosLand.com website. It is in English and Spanish.

Its is a fair price because CR is a very expensive place, one of the most expensive of all latin america so your gonna pay $3k but its gonna be well worth it because it will be a nice fancy trip.

Hola Caitlin,

You are being very wise by getting more information before you commit.

I personally have traveled Costa Rica for 11 days with a family of three and brought the entire trip in at under $2,000 ... but we didn't use a tour company + knew where to stay, how to get around via public transportation, etc.

In order to directly answer your question I consulted with my ex-brother-in-law who is a U.S. high school Spanish teacher that takes his students either to Costa Rica or Spain every other year. His response:

"$3,000 seems a bit on the high side for that trip. Our 2009 Costa Rica trip that is all-inclusive (air fair, hotels, CR ground transportation, 3meals/day, guide) is just around $2,000 after you get insurance and add in the whitewater rafting and zipline tours."

Below is the website my brother-in-law provided complete with itinerary.

Hope this helps!

Andy
I find that to be ridiculously expensive for a high school class trip. There will be many students who simply cannot afford it. And depending on where you're flying from, the airfare alone will eat up close to a third of that.

Well, ive been to costa rica, its gotten alot more expensive during the years, if its for 8 days i think you should bring a little more, if you dont speak spanish they no your tourists and will charge you extra

$3000 for Monteverde is actually fair, but there are other places that are way cheaper but it depends where you are staying.

well, everything depends of what king of hotels are you looking for, but I am from Costa Rica and I can tell you that money is ok, but not for many days, we are talking about fifteen days, if you want to got good information about tours and lodging take a look here www.turistainteligente.com

If you are staying in a nice hotel and it includes meals and some activities, it isn't a horrible price. I've done CR super cheap and I've done it really expensive. A lot will depend on if you are staying in $200 a night hotel or a $20 a night hotel. Many of the pre-planned activities such as horseback riding can run around $75 - $100 a day. CR is a great experience and the hot springs around Arenal and the Monteverde cloud forest are really cool. It is probably a fair price. Like I said, a lot depends on the details - but it's probably worth it,
