I agree with all the answers I've seen so far concerning the safety question; there are dedicated Tourist Police in Antigua as well as in other tourist destinations such as Tikal, Chichicastenango, Panajachel, and Monterrico. Someone said that Antigua isn't the place to go to learn spanish however. In my opinion this is incorrect; some of the finest spanish teachers in the world operate out of the schools in Antigua, and learning there is rapid and inexpensive if you are willing to put some commitment into the process. The best school that I know of in Antigua is Don Pedro de Alvarado Spanish School. The teachers there are excellent and the school is centrally located (next door to the landmark church of La Merced) and well administered. I hope you have a great time in Antigua. I live there for a part of each year; I'm not there right now but I can't wait to get back!

Antigua is very safe. Very full of tourist and very safe. Use common sense (like not flashing lots of cash) and you will be just fine.

As far as crime, yes. Unless you do something dumb. Exercise the same good judgment you would in any city/town in the US and you will be fine. No guarantees if you step out in front of a bus, though.

Yes...its as safe as it gets in guatemala. Its for tourists and there are a lot of cops there. Some even go on excursions to accompany groups.

You will not learn of lot of Spanish there though.....too many students and locals speaking English all the time.

Yes, but make sure you don't carry your camera where everybody can see it and just to be safe carry copies of your passport instead of the real one and don't carry all your money & credit cards all the time. Just in case.

Is very safe!! Im a tourist guide and I always take my tourists to Antigua, they love it!!
I go by myself to Antigua too, and have some fun during the day or night.
In my opinion Antigua is just gourgeous and safe.
