Is Cartagena, Colombia better than Rio De Janeiro, Brazil?

I looked at many pictures and videos of both cities. Cartagena has much better colonial architecture and a better beach. On the other hand, Rio has a better natural location and a livelier scene. I do not wish to take anything away from Rio but do you feel that Cartagena is greatly underrated as a great South American destination?

cartagena's beaches are by no means better than rio's. copacabana, leblon, and ipanema beaches beat cartagena hands down. also, being in rio gives you relatively easy access to angra dos reis, which as some AMAZING beaches. if you're more interested in beaches and nightlife, go rio. if you want to spend your time looking at architecture, go to cartagena.

I'm Colombian an even I say Rio. Although the stereotypes say different, Cartagena is safer though.

im from colombia and i think cartagena is great, a city full of history and great people, I will really enjoy there... but if you are looking for nice beaches, then go to brazil.

I don't know, but I hear Cartagena has some real awesome coke though. :)

Will recommend Cartagena, cheaper, safe and most people speak english there.
