Mrs. Obama rules!
Been 7 times and yes, it is a relatively safe place to go especially if you take your precautions as in any other place you visit. Santiago has become quite hectic lately due to the traffic and some house burglars but the provinces are very quiet and peaceful, especially the south. Overall, Chile remains a quite safe place to visit. However, in these days, I guess there isnt such a thing as a "safe country". Just be careful wherever you go.

yep, I was there not too long ago. completely safe.

It is one of the safest places this side of the ocean. Very friendly and nice. Also very different for the us.

I went to Chile a couple of years ago with a friend (who is also a girl) and we never once felt that our safety was in jeopardy. We rented a car and drove around Santiago, Vina del Mar, Valparaiso, and Isla Negra. From what I experienced, Chile was very clean, modern, and not dangerous compared to other Latin American countries. We were able to walk around (at night!) without any fear of being harrassed.

Obviously, as a female traveler, you should be very careful when going to any foreign country. Be especially careful of petty thievery, so hold on to your purse or bag at all times.

It's relatively safe, as with most developed countries in the world where there are delinquents you can expect some danger. But in general it's relatively safe. Just don't flaunt anything expensive and carry too much cash. Especially in the city centre Paseo Ahumada where there are a few pickpocketers and beggars. But the usual you'd find in Asia, Europe and the highly "developed" USA.

one of the safest countries in the world, certainly on that continent, and also one of the most beautiful....have a great time!

any city can be safe or dangerous it depends where you go or what time you go, i have been to many places and one of then is Canada by far the best place to live in the world not said by me but by the American media and embassies, i visit Toronto and if you go to certain areas lets say around 11:00 pm is dangerous , I can tell you that in Paris,Berlin,Santiago(Chile),Prague or Belfast you will find dangerous spots i can tell you this because i have been in the places that i mention.
Still not convinced? Google "crimes per capita by country" to find the most dangerous countries in the world at www.nationmaster.com. Here are the Top 5 results:
— Dominica
— New Zealand
— Finland
— Denmark
— Chile
there you have it just do you research.

Let me put it THIS way; our Government has been warning us for MONTHS that WE could be hit by Terrorists at ANY moment. What makes you think Chile is any LESS safe??!

mentaliptus
Anabel do not exaggerated as far as say the safest in the world, not it is not, neither the best for make tourism any other country in Latin America is more exciting and has more to see than Chile.
i know Chile.
