The term Third World was originally coined in times of the Cold War to distinguish those nations that are neither aligned with the West (NATO) nor with the East, the Communist bloc. Today the term is often used to describe the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania.
Many poorer nations adopted the term to describe themselves. |

Chile has the largest gap between rich and poor in all of Latin America. Driving around Santiago I sometimes feel that I go from the "first" world (suburbs that resemble the US) to the "third" world -- where I see garbage all over and anything serves as shelter, like little shacks. This can happen a matter of minutes. It is really strange.
However, I don´t agree with the Three Worlds Theory, because it doesn't have an objective definition. How can you group countries like Nicaragua or Rwanda, that are very poor with a country like Chile, which is the richest country in Latin America and probably more expensive than some countries in Eastern Europe?
"Despite criticism that the term has no objective definition and that it is out-of-date, colonialist, othering, or inaccurate, its use remains common. The term is also disliked as it is not a reality but an ideology." Wikipedia, "Third World"
I agree with wikipedia, it´s a theory that is ideological. It doesn´t reflect any "objective" reality, but an ultra-subjective one. The theory was probably written by someone who never traveled to the "third world". |

well, we chileans like to think of ourselves as an 'emerging market' country or an isle in the middle of a poorer, corrupt neighborhood. but of course that isnt the same as first world country or developed country. so third world would apply, given the lack of such a term as second world. relative to argentina and venezuela, this place is way better -incomes are higher, students arent killed at uni and people in the govt is still quiet while it steals, not overtly, like in the rest of latin america. |
