Yes it is a great place. And you dont need a lot of money. My mother in law makes about 450 USD per month (9,000,000 pesos) And she does well.. Has her own apt, travels to the putomayo where she is from often, (not by airplane very often) If you dont want to live on the hill above septima.. You can live well on not a lot. |

Well if you live in the big cities, it's a great place to live. People are really warm, food and nightlife is great, and you can find some amazing landscapes all over its territory.
Cities like Medellin, Bogotá and Cartagena have had vast improvements in safety, and health and education coverage. Currently, there are several mass transportation systems, as well as several infrastructure (highways, parks, malls, etc) projects being developed in major cities.
A big part of the visible improvement in life conditions in those cities is related with the huge investment government has made in improving its army and police training and equipment. Traveling through colombian highways is a lot safer now, and risk of being kidnapped have reduced dramatically. That means that areas that ten years ago were closely related to murders and kidnappings, are now safe for visiting.
Foreign tourists say life is very cheap in Colombia, which is true if you compare colombian and foreign prices. However, for poor people, which account for a big portion of colombian population, things aren't so easy. Unemployment rate is close to 10%, and of those with a job, many of them are employed through outsourcing (without benefits), and are paid minimum wage (225 USD) or less.
Oh, and by the way, 9'000.000 pesos = 4500 USD, not 450 USD. |
