Is Colombia safe for travel? |
I'm planning a trip to South America in a couple months. My first leg will take me to Cartegena and Bogota. I am a 24 yearold white male, limited spanish and am traveling alone. Are these areas safe? From everything I've read, it seems safe if you just keep your wits about you and don't travel to FARC or Guerilla controlled areas. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

You won't regret coming to Colombia. I'm currently living in Bogota and I'm white, blond, etc... typical gringo looks. I've been here a year now and I've not had a problem. My spanish is very good but you should be fine with limited spanish. Especially in Cartagena where they're used more tourists. Once you get here you'll realize it's a great place and the FARC and all that will seem like its in another country.
In Bogota, a lot of tourists stay near the Zona Rosa or Parque 93 areas or in the Centro near La Candelaria. The Candelaria is old and historic and tends to be cheaper but not as 'trendy' as the other places I mentioned. Crime can be a concern at night but I live 2 blocks from it in what many consider a bad street, but I've avoided problems so far. |

Yes it is. I go there every summer. I even go to the rural areas and there's cops everywhere. Is all about common sense, just like when you go to a major city like NYC, if you go to the dangerous side then you're asking for trouble. Have fun! |

Yes, these areas are safe. I suggest staying in high traffic areas and travel by plane is better. Bogota is my favorite city, but if you like history, beautiful people, or beaches then you will also enjoy Cartagena. Pay attention and enjoy your trip. |

look yes . but Bogota is crap - its safe but crap for real
here is a reason why
at the moment the president of the country is is Álvaro Uribe who is one of the only south american presidents who is ANTI-Guerilla, this i due to a miss fortune he had when Guerrilla (A.K.A FARC forcas armadas revolucionarias de Colombia - armed revolutionary forces of Colombia) kidnapped his father - asking for Ransom, then after Uribe payed the Ransom FARC murdered his father thus his hatred to the FARC making Colombia safer than Brazil
you need to check out
Cartagena , Medellin , Cali , Barranquilla , Santa marta ....ect
well there you have it 6 big reasons to go to Colombia
Colombia is Cheaper safer and better for all the right reasons
hope i have helped you - have a freat day! |
