Is Costa Rica in August unbearable?

My husband and I would like to visit Costa Rica, but I am a teacher so the only vacation time I have is in the summer, when I know it's the country's rainy season. Is it even worth it? Or is the rain really annoying and frustrating? I am hoping the rain is warm and doesn't stop you from enjoying things.

The rains in August are primarily in the afternoons, and it's really not bad. You'll likely find that when you awake on an August morning in Costa Rica, it will be sunny and warm, and in the afternoon around 3:30-4:00pm, it will get a little overcast, then rain for a couple of hours, then stop.

The travel calendars say that rainy season here starts in May, which they need to change universally, as we really dont see heavy rains until September and October.

I say go ahead with your plans to visit Costa Rica in August as many do. You'll love the country and it's people.

I happen to have grown up in C.R. and consistently go down to visit several times a year.
The severity of the rainy season in dependent on where you are in the country and how strong the season is. August isn't the dead middle of the rainy season so it is not at its worse. If anything I think the country itself looks much nicer in the rainy season because everything is starting to become green and all the flowers are blooming. In terms of rain what I have found is that it will usually be sunny from morn until afternoon than rain in the afternoon and night... Obviously it is a generalization and weather is not that constant. So if you are looking to see a beautiful country and meet wonderful people August is still perfect. If you are just looking to get away and bask in the sun all day long on a beach, than it is not the best time.
Hope that helped.

Costa Rica only has 2 seasons, wet and dry. Costa Rica has an average year round temperature of 70 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 27 degrees Celsius) and the coolest months are November, December and January. The rainy season is called the rainy season because it usually rains sometime during the day. It doesn't rain all day long. The rainy season is no more frustrating than the rainy season in Florida which is from June - September. Here are a couple of link sabout Costa Rica, although based on investment, the have many more links, articles and videos which will give you more answers and information about Costa Rica and what you can expect during the rainy season.

Yea I think the rainy season is in the summer time. When I went in July 2008 it was very rainy. But it would dry up fast. Stay in a tourist area. You should go white river rafting, canopying, and to the beach. I didn't get to go the beach but river rafting is fun and canopying. Also if you guys like to party go to El Pueblo.
