Is El Salvador a safe country?

Like in every country, there are safe places and dangerous places. If you are going to El Salvador you will find interesting and amazing places, but first do some research about the safety of the place you will be at with the local people at the hotel or place you are staying over, or even with taxi drivers and even waiters!. There are places where you can safely party all night and there are others where you can't even go out of your home after 6:30 PM. Those are the places where gangs roam and it's difficult to get police's help.

You will be surprised about how many people can or will try to understand English. It doesn't matter if you are black, white, brown or even green, Salvadorean people like pretty much their foreign visitors and are usually helpful if you need something.

Like some answer before: don't show your money unnecessarily, don't get too drunk, do your homework and stay in safe places, specially at night try to stay in group. Beware If you see a lot of people with too many strange tattoos at night, specially if one of the tattoos says something like "perdoname madre" (mother forgive me).

You should not worry, ask for touristic places and you might surprise with the quantity of other tourists in that place too.

I have traveled to El Salvador regularly since 2001.
And I have never had a problem.
It is true there are areas that are not safe for you to go.(Soyapango for one).But I can think of many cities in the U.S. I have been to that have unsafe areas.
You didn't state what you are going to be doing for you school types they generally stick you in Zona Rosa which is very safe.
Use common sense :
Don't flash money around, try to keep the jewelry to a minimum,
travel in groups, don't walk back to your hotel so drunk you can hardly stand. be aware of what is going on around you. That said .
I feel the people of El Salvador are among some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. And I have found that when stopping to ask for directions they are also very helpful.
It's not like the gangs line up at the airport to knock off the cheles.
Be respectiful and people when treat you just fine.

I am going to El Salvador in 3 weeks. People have told me that it is one of the countries with the most crime. They also told me that most of the people are very nice and love having come to their country. They say not to go out after dark because it is too dangerous. So have fun and be safe. Oh and bring a small flashlight with you everywhere because they have alot of power outages. Good Luck!
