I have been to Guatemala twice. Once I took a plane and used the local buses to visit and the other time and drove down with my van. I have never had any problems what so ever. I have seen many parts of the country including remote areas out of the tourist circuit. It is by far the most beautiful country in central america. I can tell you that Guatemalans are shy and friendly people. Guatemala city is a bit more hazardous, but most folks leave this polluted city as soon as they arrive in the country. The only other place which might pose a risk is in Panajachel where certain people have reportedly been pick-pocketed, but this might be an urban legend and by no means is this a dangerous village.Like other respondants said, try to dress casually and leave expensive stuff at home, you shouldn't have any problems. Be sure to visit Tikal and Lago de Atitlan, another favorite of mine is Semuc Champey which is less known that the previous two. Have a great trip.

Guatemala City is as dangerous as any other big city. Just avoid being outside of the normal tourist zones. Go out to the tourist spots like Tikal, Antigua, Atitlan, and you will be fine. There is no problem at all.

Consider the time that you have in this world and think if you really want to go there and visit the seat of the Maya civilization. There are dangers anywhere and you must do what you can not to become a victim of circumstance...Remember that it will be hot and humid also so the way you dress plays a lot on the way men feel. Remember you only live once, so it's up to you..Enjoy Tikal if you go.

I live in Guatemala.......... and as many countries around the world there a crimes...but rapes to tourists? mmm I don´t think so.

If you come.... I suggest that you do not go outside with jewelry or attractive cams, also that you don´t aboard public buses at Guatemala city, don´t caress native indian children or take pictures of them.

Guatemala is sooo pretty that I am sure you are going to love it.... I suggest also that you visit Guatemala during the Holy Week. Many tourist from around the world say that the Holy Week here is the most amazing thing they have ever seen..... better than Spain.

Good luck and happy landings at the Eternal Spring Country "Guatemala"

I've been to Guatemala and am going back next week. You've gotten great advice so far. Don't put yourself in an risque situations and you should be fine. As the other gentleman said, don't draw attention to yourself with flashy clothes or jewelry. Casual is best. Enjoy yourself. Guatemala is beautiful. And if you stay in Guatemala City or Antigua it gets cool in the evenings, so take a light sweater. Also, right now is the rainy season in Guatemala City, so be prepared for lots of rainy afternoons.

Don't worry is a civilized city...i had been there a couple of times and is pretty safe

Just avoid being in lonely places late at night, is better.
