Technically speaking Machu Picchu is the name of a mountain, so it was physically made. The term Picchu in Quechua, the language of the Inca, means mountain and the term Machu is a place name, so in other words Machu Picchu means Machu mountain. Now when most people use the term Machu Picchu they are actually referring to the ruins on Machu Picchu. So that is why most answerers incorrectly said man-made. But the ruins should more correctly be referred to as the Machu Picchu ruins or ruins of Machu Picchu, to distinguish it from the physical site or physical location of Machu Picchu. Also, that very steep peak behind the ruins one often views on pictures is known as Wayna Picchu or Wayna mountain.

And to damitz, nothing you said contradicted me. Picchu means mountain, so if Machu means old, then it is old mountain. And Wayna (Huayna is the former way of spelling--get current) Picchu means young mountain. And you referred to it as the city of Machu Picchu, let me emphasize, "city of" Machu Picchu (your words), i.e., city of the mountain of Machu Picchu. To make it clear for you, Machu Picchu is the name of the mountain where the ruins are. And mountains, unlike ruins, are made by natural forces such as plate tectonics.

it is a city......do you think it eroded that way from the wind and rain??? humans physically made it, with their hands and crude tools, human labor, etc......you need more education.....

Fozzie
Not sure what you're asking.

Humans physically made it a very long time ago.
