Is Venezuela a Capitalist country?

If so why?

Venezuela is hard to figure out. In theory is a Socialist country or like the president says: "21st Century Socialism". Government controls all oil and mineral exploration and commercialization plus all public services. There's private enterprise on service and retail but it's heavily controlled and taxed unless you're friends with government officials.

Not anymore. For instance, with Chavez as front man, no one can have two estates. One will automatically be taken away and given to the 'poor'. The same thing goes with cars. That's why real estate has surged drastically in Cucuta, the Colombian neighbouring city where Venezuelans are flocking to buy real estate.

Another example is the price of petrol; it's subsidised and it is almost half the price as what it is in the US and more expensive than in Colombia, so loads of Colombians cross the border to fetch gasoline - some in plastic bags!

It is a mixed economy , like many countries. Most of the important oil and gas industry is now in public ownership, but most of the other sectors are privately owned and managed..

The funniest (and saddest) thing about Venezuela is that the President channels the oil for his pocket.

There thousands of people dying of hunger there. Sad but true.
