arica is cheaper than the other cities especially Santiago but more expensive than Tacna -Peru , i was in tacna last year and many Chileans go to tacna to get dental services and buy clothing , Chile is expensive because they buy almost all their vegetables from Peru, and they don't produce oil;there fore gasoline , transport and products have a higher price . that is why is expensive. see for yourself and you will notice in arica most products are imported from the northern neighbor.

i have just been in arica, you are probably going to cross the border from tacna, i am in arequipa now
arica is cheaper than some other parts of chile, i was with my girlfriend in a place callled hostal chungara en Patricio linch street, it cost the both of us 12$ , i am sure you can get something cheaper, but it wont be near the center which is really nice, but near the bus terminal.
I think south of chile, meaning patagonia is the cheapest, you wont find arica and iquique that cheap...
for example, a tour to a very nice place called lauca park from arica will cost you 150000 pesos which are about 28 dolars, chile is very expensive in comparison with peru, you must prepare yourself
my email is elid1979@yahoo.com should you require more details, take care!

it probably is a lot cheaper and definetly a lot drier. It's actually the driest place on earth.

Arica is not expensive and you can even find a nice beachside place for a reasonable price (under $10/night). Hostel style accomodations are not difficult to find. Make sure you are familiar with Chilean Spanish, in contrast to the Peruvian version, because otherwise it can be difficult to adjust. Don't forget there is a time change when you cross the border (easy to miss!) and the dollar doesn't go quite as far in Chile since the economy is stronger than Peru. If your income were in Chilean pesos, they would go further than Peruvian soles but not so for US dollars. Know the exchange rate ahead of time as well, because otherwise everything seems MUCH more expensive when it's not! Taxi rides are handled a little differently than Peru as well, but make sure you know the price ahead of time. Get a little history on Arica from Peruvians before you go and then get the Chilean version afterwards...the contrast is quite interesting. I lived in Arequipa and thought Peru had technically won the war until I went to Chile and heard their version! Have fun and enjoy the beauty!

it is cheaper than the main cities, and much better than tacna, on the peruvian side of the border.

At the bus station in Arica there are many hostels accross the street. People that own these hostels wait at the bus station for buses to arrive. I believe you can get one for $7 with out bath.
Because Chile is now expensive for backpackers many are going to Argentina instead and bypassing Chile.
