I'm a college student and I've lived in Costa Rica since 1998, the tap water is clean, and there are many well kept areas, but the rivers that flow through out the city areas aren't clean, they all end up in the Central Pacific ocean, area of Puntarenas, if you want to go to the cleanest beaches try going to the North Pacific Area of Guanacaste located 5 hours driving from the capitol of San Jose. The weather is nice and the people are friendly. There is no military in the country so it is safe, and the money is dedicated towards free healthcare and education.

I have been there 4 times. Costa Rica is very clean. I do not recall seeing liter there at all. Not like Mexico. The water in the hotels was fine. Do not go swimming in the rivers. They have crocodiles there.

Here is clean everywhere, but is not clean in the capital city (San José) but there's no beach.

Dirt in San Jose is the "Zona Roja". But in other areas of San Jose is very clean. Just the center center of San José is dirty. But another parts in San José are so clean. Don't worry, you don't need to go there. You can visit another "Provincias" like Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Puntarenas and Limón. There IS CLEAN.

We went to Costa Rica last year and it's wonderful there. I didn't find it dirty at all. We liked it so much we plan on buying a place to live down there and go for the winters. The people are warm and friendly and it's cheap too. Just be careful of the rip tides in the ocean.

The streets have some trash, but the tap water is drinkable from almost anywhere in the country. You shouldn´t have a problem, plus its a really beautiful place!
