Well, I live in Lima, and I guess Im white, and as every large city, it has dangerous places and relatively safe places, but you have to consider your attitude when in every large city so you are not going to make yourself a victim, dont wear flashy outfits, a big pro camera, a map or a spanish-english dictionary in your hands!! it spells "im not from here please rob me!". Let me give some pointers:
-dont go downtown at night
-dont enter dark or abandon streets
-dont drift around, pick a destination and discuss a route with someone who know the place, even for short walks
-dont trust lightly, we are quite good people, but there are rotten apples everywhere
-dont take taxi rides alone, in fact taxi rides are more dangerous than public transportation
-if you are going to take a taxi, you should call a ride from a well known company, prices are cheap
-travel in packs, the more the safer
-get a peruvian friend, most of us love our country and are very proud of it, and we love to show it. dont know any peruvian? call me!! haha
hope you enjoy your stay here! |

Hello,
I am a peruvian and live in Lima.
I can guarantee there is no negative attitude to Americans nor Europeans in Lima. Peruvian people are very friendly.
But as in all big cities, there are people that would like to take advantage of tourists so take care. Also you have to ask what places to avoid.
If you come again to Peru or want to have further advise let me know I would be glad to help you.
Have a wonderful day. |
