Id go with Cartagena. The night life inside the walled city is incredible. The beach isnt bad. You can take a day trip out to Islas Rosario and snorkel or just hang at one of the resorts. The Fort is pretty cool.. and if you hook up.. pretty romantic. Avoid The area around the Hilton.. Its way too touristy. They have an open air market where you can buy Cuban Cohibas. (If they are less than about 100 bux they are fake and may even be that if you pay a lot.) The seafood is terrific.. Two things however. The street vendors will hand you you their card and direct you to a certain store. DONT take it. If you show that card, the prices are 20% higher-thats how they get their commission. Also, "free" tours expect a tip. And the reason the knockers on the doors are so high is because men came on horses.. Also the bigger and more decorated the door.. the richer the original owner. The museum of torture is pretty cool. I think there is more to do in Cartagena. and I love the people. |

i would recommend either barranquilla or cartagena:
barranquilla is more of a city. there's amazing restaurants, shopping, casinos, bars, etc. the hotels are also nice and have good swimming pools. the beach is about 20 min to half an hour away.
cartagena is right on the beach and has a really pretty sector called "la ciudad vieja" which is an old, muralled colonial part. it's really pretty and the best hotels are in here. the beaches in cartagena are a lot better.
