Is it easy to travel to other South American countries from Peru?

I am planning to volunteer in Cusco, Peru for a month this summer. I would like to take another month or two to travel around South America.

My question is...is it easy and affordable to travel to other South American countries from Peru?

Thanks! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Obama rules!
Lima is a hub to Lan, Taca and Copa so yes, it could be cheap to travel from Lima. If you want a reliable, safe bus company try Ormeño (www.grupormeno.com.pe)
www.lan.com
www.tacaperu.com
www.copa.com

Hi,

I am sure this site will be able to resolve your questions.

It is possible but South America is very big, a flight to Santiago would be 3.5 hrs; to Bs Aires 5 hrs, etc. The fares normally go around US $ 600-800

go to www.lan.com to obtain info about flights and offers.

good luck

You'll find it cheaper to fly to Santiago from Lima than Cusco from Lima. If you get to Santiago, you can take a bus across the Andes to the Argentine city of Mendoza which is an attractive place. Alternatively you could travel to the lake district of Chile and cross into Argentina at Bariloche.

Kelly M,

When I was in Peru we met a few people who were volunteering like yourself. They told us that it is extremely easy to travel around all of South America (and cheap too!) as long as you don't mind taking buses around.

Bus transportation can be sketchy at times, but will be 10x cheaper than flying around South America. Try to plan a circular trip so that you can avoid backtracking, as the buses are usually slow and can sometimes be unreliable.

Also, the best thing about buses is that they are so cheap you can change your travel plans at any time without worrying about the money you are losing. You don't want to be hindered by a flight that leaves at a certain time when you want to stay a few extra days. Hope that helps!

I agree with the last few comments, AVOID BUSES at all costs, it is very risky in Peru, I am Peruvian and not even I trust traveling by bus! If you can spend a little more for airplane ticket then do so. You traveling will be much pleasant and safe

Busses are very dangerous nowadays in the Andes pssss... thats not very precise. Taking SUPER CHEAP busses to travel INSIDE PERU that could be dangerous. But if you use a normal well known bus company you will be ok.

Now talking about traveling to OTHER COUNTRIES in BUS. Thats other stuff. And again, taking normal busses in this particular case is safe.

DO NOT LISTEN TO RONNIE, Busses are very dangerous nowadays in the Andes, Lots of crashes going on.
Airplane is the way to go and it not that expensive.
