it is possible but it is going to take you about a year to do it. Sounds really fun word of advice, when you pass through Central America be extremly carefull and take your precautions in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala as well as Mexico. This four are beautfiul countries but really dangerous. |

Yes it is possible. However, there is an area known as El Tapon del Darien where there aren't any roads between Panama and Colombia. What other trekkers have done is cross that 50 km block by sea, i.e. Panama City to Turbo in Antioquia or further up to Cartagena. |

Well I have never done it (by the way, sounds great!! Wish I could!) but of course it is possible. And if you are from U.S. and you have dollars, it is even more possible! Everything would be cheaper!
You will have no problem. Enjoy it! |

Pan-American Highway would be the key route of your backpacking adventures
Like someone here mentioned already, the tricky part is the Darién Gap, where you would need to find a way to get around it. There is no "official" route that goes through it since it is mostly jungle and swampland.
Unfortunately, as well...that Northern Area of Colombia can be very dangerous pending on Guerilla activity in the area. There are also some stretches in Central America where the Pan American Highway can be very dangerous to travel on.
Your trip is very possible though, I would do some more research for each country you plan on crossing and take an precautionary action.
Good Luck |

It certainly is possible, but you need to do more research than just asking YA. For example, every one of the countries you pass through will require you to have a visa or tourist card. You will be required to prove you have enough money and a means to leave the country. In some cases a visa has to applied for in advance.
There is a fifty some mile stretch of land between Colombia and Panama that has no road, just jungle and swamp. I certainly am not trying to discourage you, and would like to make such a trip myself, just suggesting you prepare. You could start by contacting the Embassy of each country you plan to visit about their entry requirements. Then do a little looking around on line about each country and look up information on the Darien Gap. |

It seems a very hard mission...lol. But if you have time, I guess you can do it. I would really like to do something like that, do you speak some Spanish?? It would be useful in some rural areas of any Latin American country. I recommend you to start the return to the U.S. from Patagonia, the Southern region of Argentina, it has the most amazing sightseeing of the world, and it's the region with the highest quality of life in Latin America, comparable with some Western Europe countries, and of course; visit Buenos Aires too, but don´t start your travel there you would miss the magnificent South. Try to go to Uruguay too, it has beautiful beaches, and it's one of the safest countries in the region.
Good luck.
Tell us about your trip while you are doing it. |
