Yep you can ride all the way through South America

You can drive in any of those countries with a US drivers license. Of course, you will need your passport to obtain a visa in each country and they will all charge you for a temporary permit for your car. (You cannot drive all the way through to South America. There is a stretch between Panama and Colombia that is impassable by car).

Yes, you can use a US license to do this with no problem at all. Most us citizens who fly down and rent cars in these countries just present a us drivers license and they are fine.

You can, yes. You will need your passport and proof of insurance. Your passport will be stamped showing that have brought a car into the country and will tell you how long you can stay there, with the car. When you leave each country you had better have your car with you or be prepared to spend a lot of time and money explaining why not.
Also be prepared to pay a lot of little fees and bribes at each border crossing as well as being shaken down by the various traffic cops. It is a form of tax.

I think it would be more prudent to get a international driver's license (good for a year) from your local AAA office. Not all cops in those countries speak or read english. Costs next to nothing and gives you peace of mind - it's what I did when I drove in Guatemala.
