Is it safe for an American to travel to Bogotá, Colombia this summer?

My Spanish is limited, although close to conversant. I'm a white male aged 18, and would probably travel alone until I met up with a friend. Is it safe to travel there? I only ask ebcause everyone up here is telling me it's not, that there's lots of kidnapping.

yes, but Bogota han´t summer because it´s in the tropical zone

but, the climate of Bogota isn´t hot, because it´s 2.600m over the sea level... it´s the third most hight capital in the world

the average temperature is 12°... there are moments when the temperature can be in 20°, and there are moments (in the night) when teh etemperature gets 4°

of course, there is kidnapping in Bogota... but cities as Mexico city and Rio de Janeiro showed worse numbers about crime

I have made 6 trips to Colombia in the past 2 years. I am not involved in drugs. I was in Bogota in 2007 while President Bush was in Bogota. On none of my trips have I seen violence or drugs. That being said, Bogota is a city of 8.5 million. It is as safe as, or safer, than most cities in the world of this size.

Well Colombia is not the 'kidnapping capital of the world' anymore. It used to be. Not it has dropped several notches leaving Mexico in the No. 1 spot. (don't take my word for it, read the second link below)

Colombia is a safe as you want it to be. having common sense and being street smart should keep you safe all time - even in New York!

In other words, don't go wandering around the slums late at night, alone, flashing around a gold chain and boasting a foreign accent.

Hang out with people who know the city.

Last year by the way, Colombia had the highest amount of tourists of all time; almost 2 million and I don't see that number going down any time soon.

Ah, and one more thing. Anything you see in the news will never be good news - the the whole point of the news - to attract audience, ask people WHO HAVE BEEN TO COLOMBIA.

I agree with previous answer about it being safe.

Stay around the northern area of Bogota and don't flash jewelry and money and you should be ok.

enjoy
