Is it safe to backpack Isla Margarita, Venezuela?

I'd like to travel to Isla Margarita, Venezuela and hitchhike around the island, maybe even explore Isla Cubagua and Isla Coche. Just would like to know if it’s a area of crime, I heard parts of Venezuela can be pretty dangerous.

Hi,.. I was born and lived in Venezuela ,.. just moved to the U.S. 2 years ago.,..I had no experience hiking but my husband does,..he went to margarita twice,...is one of the most beautiful and touristic place in Venezuela,...you may find a lot of americans and europeans,. well at least by 2004..but,.. you have to be very carefull, if you have a friend that speaks spanish let him do the talk...don't show off or brag about your things,.. don't wear expensive or very recognize brands like nike, adidas, etc..(north face/kelty/vasque is ok)..they don't have these type of brands in Venezuela..not very popular,...ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PASSPORT WITH YOU,.. a passport in the blackmarket (Caracas) is about $10000,.. try to stay away from Caracas as much as you can...try always to be in turistic places,. stay away from suburbs,.("barrios",.or small towns)...IMPORTANT: some thiefs may try to take something meaningless (maybe a hat or something small), and then they'll run away,. the idea is try to make you follow them,. if you do, you are in big trouble,...they will try to take you to an desolated place, they will take all your belongings... just let it go.

Also be aware of sellers,. they might over charge you if they hear you speaking english or any other language they don't understand (different than spanish)

Don't hike alone,..be with AT LEAST 4 people..including the spanish speaking person with you(if possible),.. always keep cash in your pockets,.in different parts of your body,. don't keep it in your sock, it will be the first place they'll look for...some thiefs will just be ok with some cash...You might not even have any problem at all,. just be prepared,...Hope you have a good trip,.. GOOD LUCK!

If you are an American or Europen I would be careful where you travel right now. We have a little target on us right now. Travel in the states or the neutral places. I would stay out of there for the moment. How about going to some us national parks? What about Australia, NZ, US, Canada, UK There are lots of safe places safe that for later. If you are from there go. If you are from Mexico or south america go. Just not if you are from a marked country.
