I found Colombia to be very very safe. Cali, Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta, and Cartagena are all wonderful cities and I had no trouble. Of course be cautious at night, but I walked alone through La Candalaria in Bogota often at night and never felt threatened or scared. Colombians are so gracious to their gringo guests, they will go out of their way to show you around and give you advice. We got free rides from strangers, stayed in the homes of new friends, and all with minimal Spanish. They are proud of their country and tired of its reputation as an unsafe destination.
There are also lots of police everywhere who are helpful and friendly. They will gladly give you a lift back to your hotel if you are stranded or lost.
Don't be scared. Its an INCREDIBLE country with lots to do. The nightlife is superb, and every city has a different flavor. Tayrona Nat'l Park is one of the world's most beautiful beaches, I highly recommend. |

What???

Go to Cartagena It is safe and very pretty and on top of it, it is very rreasonablein cost.
Most of Colombia is safe there are and were very few spots that were dangerous.
Besides their government works hard to make sure people visiting are safe.
My step family lives there. |

I just got back from Colombia. It was amazing and I have nothing but wonderful things to say. I only went to the old city in Cartagena and from what I was told by the locals, Bogota, Cali and Medellin are not nearly as safe as Cartagena. We walked the streets at night and nevere felt threatened. Hope that helps. |

Columbia is safe......It would be sad to miss it. I have a daughter that lives in Bogota, I've been there. It can be dangerous though. In just a short moment, it can change. Do not go the streets by yourself, especially at night. Be sure to go to -old Bogota- I thought this was really special. I've just been the area's around Bogota so I can't say anything about the other area's. My daughter says area's close to Ecuador and Peru are to be especially cautious of. Go, be careful with that expensive camera though!! Travel lightly, lots of treats to bring back with you. Mo |

Bogota, Cali etc....are safe (the cities), of course it isn't 100% secure, like any other country in the world, but you would be surprised at how safe the cities are. Of course there are also the dangerous places, towns bordering Ecuador or Venezuela. |
