Dangerous is a state of mind. It's a way of living too. It´s everywhere just because you're alive. I have travelled a lot and maybe I ask, is Rio dangerous? or NYC? or London? You have watched what has happened in those cities above. I've been in Venezuela because of job. I can tell you It's far less dangerous than your mind can imagine. Just try to speak a little espanol and you'll see a myriad of smiles.
Just Enjoy. Ask about the Margarita Island in the Caribbean Sea, is a bonche. (You can also ask about, Merida, Canaima y Los Roques)

no it is not. Read the news, all kinds of crime is up in Venezuela. Add to that the fact that Commies are taking over, and it is not a good thing to be an American in Venezuela!

Well I went there three years ago and I was fine. These things are down to luck though and check this link for up to date advice. Plus, while it's a fascinating place, I wouldn't say it was as interesting or beautfiful as other Latin American countries: I would recommend Brazil instead for beautiful beaches and really friendly people.

i have been 3 times recently and if you know someone there they will make sure you don't go to the ranchero sections where there are allot of chavez supporters. the people of venezuela are the kindest most fun people i have ever met. if you can go to margarita island and you won't have to worry about politics at all. of course be careful and courteous to all . have a great time the most beautiful places on earth are in venezuela oh and of course stay away from the colombian border.

If you do, I will suggest Caracas. Beware of Hugo Chavez and do not finance his political views.

A group from our church just traveled there and it was very difficult at first to get the plane reservations all set and then there was a lot of tension when they arrived. Having been there myself before Chavez's election, I would not go back. There are many there who will try to cause trouble just because you are American. Then, on top of everything else, if you get too close to the border of Colombia, you have to worry about the guerrilas and the drug cartels. Kidnapping of Americans for ransom is common in these areas. SHORT ANSWER....NO

I would advise against it. Chavez is a dangerous nut. I personally believe he is a paranoid delusional. I wouldn't put it past him to arrest Americans and accuse them of being spies.
