Is it safe to travel in Guatemala for two young white women?

Hello, I am currently serving in the Peace Corps in Jamaica and a fellow volunteer and I hope to travel in Central America when we finish our service in August of this year. We plan to start in Guatemala and study Spanish there for 3-4 weeks, and then work our way down to Costa Rica. We are both young white women and have dealt with harassment as women and as white people here in Jamaica. As Peace Corps we know not to go out at night, not to flaunt wealth, etc. but I have been reading about crime in Guatemala and it sounds a bit scary. Has crime escalated recently? Especially towards Americans? Do you recommend coming, or not coming, and are there places we should stay away from? We plan to do our trip on the readjustment allowance that Peace Corps gives us, which is not a lot... And we enjoy living like locals here in Jamaica and feel that we would like to continue that kind of immersion travel--if it is safe. I don't mind chicken buses or bucket baths, but I don't want to put us in danger. What advice can you offer?

I lived in Guatemala for ten years and your situation sounds kind of tenuous. Certainly, your best bet, as in all travels, is to contact someone in country that is familiar with the latest news concerning rough spots. Find out where and when not to go from a local and you will be safer.

Your experience in Jamaica will be invaluable and it sounds like you have the basic survival instincts already in place. However, I'd make sure to not be seen without the company of one or more male friends as otherwise, you will be inviting trouble.

Stay moving and don't be caught in lonely places. Better yet, find a trusted male friend to travel with you. Buena suerte!

If your soul purpose is to come and learn spanish your best option is Antigua Guatemala, it was turning dangerous but there is more police presence there and they installed cameras all over the place. You will be able to find work in restaurants and bars.

But if you can go directly to Costa Rica I stronly rrecommend you do that. I feel bad for saying this about my country but is a poo hole and it is going down the toilet. It has become really dangerous this year, maybe by August things will be better but who knows (the president is a moron).

JoRdY Guatemala!!!
Ok first Jamaica is Jamaica and Guatemala is guatemala you cant compare Guatemala with Jamaica cause are two diferents countries, my country is dangerous just like sweden, USA, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Spain or Swaziland we have place very dangerous and have safe places how for example Antigua Guatemala, Quetzaltenango (Xela), Panajachel, Cobán, Petén, Chichicastenango, the towns of the Atitlan lake, the pacific coast and the zones 10,11,13,14,15,16,17, zona viva, salvador roud or naranjo and concepcion Counties, In guatemala, Guatemala city is a big city, modern and cosmopolitan (7 millions of people 50% of the country population in the metropolitan area) and have places many dangerous but are far of the touristic zones, in guatemala 33% of the population are white european ancestors (spain, germany, UK, France, Italy, sweden, portugal and polonia in the major of the case , 60% are tanned (indians and mixed races), 1.7% asian origen, 1% arabian origen, 0.3% black people and 4% others (americans, australians, canadian, indus, etc,) and we dont have problems with the american, Antigua Guatemala is the best place in the world for learn spanish and is the best city in the world for a tourism visit (http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/article.php?page_id=2404), in Guatemala live aprox 900,000 foreign people mostly for the Europe, US, Canada, Latin America, Taiwan, Israel, Palestina, korea and Arabia and when you stay in Guatemala only takes security precautions by INGUAT, how for example ask to the INGUAT for dangerous areas, use the yellow or green taxis in guatemala city, the green buses, etc, dont worry Guatemala is cool you needs only enjoy GUATEMALA.

as you know any country is dangerous.. but im telling you .. don't worry.. you are going to be in the parts with all the natives.. they are all nice people.. what i think is that you definitely should try to stay away from the capital.. its the most dangerous part of guatemala. im sure you are just going to get there because of the airport. but live as soon as you can.. im sure you are going to love it!

its a really Beautiful place!!!
