It's safe if you are careful - do not wear any jewelry, purse, watch, fanny packs - men must keep their wallet in their front pocket - carry your passport at all times - those zipper pants are great to carry all the stuff safely.

If you are touring Peru itself, it is best to hire a guide - we hired someone recommended by the hotel staff and we were left alone by the rampant pick pockets, etc. We got to see places that tourists didn't know about - he also took us to great restaurants that we never would have found - of course we paid for his meal!

As in any "foreign country" you must be vigilant and use your head. Spent a month traveling around Peru, Ecuador, Cuzco and surrounding areas but the hub is Peru and you always fly in and out of there. Air planes.....well, just relax and enjoy - but do pay attention as they often cancel flights and do not make any announcements - really! Need patience as they do not have computers - everything is done by hand so you will need lots of patience. Safest is to have made arrangements with a travel agent so that there will be a person to meet you and get you to your first location.

You should go - it was a great experience. :)

i have been to Peru 4 times and each and every time is like another country last time i when there where so many new things that i was lost Peru is blooming with credit companies ,shopping malls as big and good as in Europe, in some places it resembles streets of Miami or l.A Lima is good Cuzco also tacna and the jungle by the amazon are fantastic i consider dangerous any big city in the world just be cautious and of course don't act like rich if you know what i mean , i was robed in Paris twice and none in Peru so all depends.

A good site to go to would be the US state department.

South America in genral is fairly safe., I just returned from El salvador which has a really bad reputation. it just depends where in the country you go.

I hiked the Inca trail a few years ago. I had no problems but I would recommend a guided tour. It's reall the ebst way to travel these countries. You get a guide who knows the country, speaks the languages, and can keep you out of harms way. GAP Adventures is good company to travel with.

Hey, bro, I live in Ecuador (which is just north of Peru) and my friend and I travel the coast in Peru from Ecuador all the time. It is very safe and very beautiful also. Don't deprive yourself, take the trip, you'll love it!!

I am Peruvian, used to live in Lima most of my life. The rules:
1. Better for you to use taxis from well-established companies ( Taxi Seguro, taxi Real, etc. )
2. Avoid using/buying drugs, sometimes policemen take advantage of tourists, asking them for money in order to "avoid" taking them to jail.
3. Be careful if you go to a pub to have drinks, some very charming ladies or gentelmen can put some drug in your drink. Do not leave your drink unattended, not even when you are dancing.
3. As any other big city, Lima can be dangerous, better for you to use the regular tourist circuit.
4. Ask for prices before you buy.
5. The Lima-Cusco flights may be delayed due to the special location and weather close to Cusco´s airport.

HOWEVER: Peru is an absolutely amazing country, most of its people are friendly. Cusco is a true jewel and the Inca Trail one of the 10 things you should do before leaving this dimension. Peruvian food doubtless the best ( if your budget allows you, go to a certain restaurant on La Mar Street ) , Miraflores and Barranco absosolutely charming districts, so close to the ocean. And so many etcerteras : Be brave, do it.

I recently visited Chile and I was amazed how safe it is. I think Peru might be a little bit less safer, but that's part of the experience of traveling.

Peru can be dangerous (as are many large cities in the USA.)

It's best if you travel with an organized tour group. Don't go off alone, don't go out at night.

Smile.
You'll never know for sure if you don't go there yourself.
Everyone has different travelling experience.
Some are lucky while the others are not.
Who knows?

Um you will have to take a plane. And there could be snakes on it.

Tom M
Meh y not but from us to any other countyer they dont use extra security so there is a bigger chance of hijacking
