Is it true an American can just show up in a tourist area of Latin America and get a job?

I heard an English speaker can quickly find a job in Central or South America in the tourist industry. How would the visa work? If you don't use a visa, what is the penalty?

In most Latin American countries a foreigner can't get a job. He/she will have to wait for a vacancy and that will most likely be years till he/she finds one.

Not usually. Most of the Latin American countries have laws preventing foreigners from taking jobs that are needed by local people unless the foreigner has a skill that cannot be provided by the locals. Even then you need to have a work visa or permit and usually have to have an employer sponsor you. You have to have a tourist/visitor visa to even enter most countries and that is different than a work visa. If you are caught working without a permit you will face fines or worse. The one remark about you not ever being deported for a visa violation is not true.

yes that true. my teacher is white, when she was young and family moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil for business like 5 years then back to America. it earn good money because there millions people in latin america, they are different laws between America.

I don't think it's as easy as it sounds. I'm Peruvian and I know there are plenty of trained, qualified, English speaking people there that are desperate for jobs. you could have a job but it's not as easy as you've been told. I don't know about other Latin American countries, but in Peru if a tourist decides to stay you need to go to their immigration department and apply. My understanding is that it's not a lenghty and costly process.
Good luck

Bilingual Illiterate
Bollucks mate.

Nowadays there are loads of foreigners everywhere.

For instance most people who work in the Hotel industry in Colombia are bilingual.

If you do not have a visa you would have to pay a fine on your way out - but none of this 'expulsion' nonsense like in the US:
