Is living in Panama dangerous? |
Specifically Panama city, but in general is living in Panama safe? I've lived in Colombia and El Salvador, and I seriously doubt it is as dangerous as either, but whats your opinion?
Please no statistics. India has the highest death rate due to terrorism, yet New Delhi is probaly the safest and most laid back city I've ever been to.
So any opinions? |

I live and work in Panama City, Panama.
I have never felt unsafe anywhere in this city except for the Chorillo area (which is not really advisable for anyone to wander). There are a few other places outside of the city center that I would not recommend either. Otherwise walking the streets during the day or night is generally safe and easy to get around. As long as you don't mind the prospect of small time corruption which certainly exists here, you shouldn't have a problem, just don't be too flashy... as in any city. At no time ever have myself or anyone I know of had a problem with the police or any considerable crime which was not resolved on the spot. I also work late in my office and one night had a door open on my car. The police knocked on the door to inform me they were concerned for my safety and were checking it out. Granted there are more police per capita here than the USA, the police do actually have a good presence and it appears they have been keeping crime low. I would highly recommend this city over other Latin American cities in regards to personal safety. |

I don't believe that Panama City is any more dangerous than any other large city in Latin America.Certain areas of the city are perhaps" less safe" than others but the same can be said for Los Angeles,Boston,San Salvador and Bogota.
I agree with you not only about New Delhi but also about the use of statistics.In fact, someone told me recently that there are three kinds of lies:Lies,Damn Lies and Statistics.
The best example of this would have to be the US State Departments Travel Advisories.

Having traveled both in Panama and New Delhi I would say that Panama City is no more dangerous than any other city in the world. It is probably one of the safer Central American capitals in which to travel. I certainly had no problems while I was there.
If you have lived in San Salvador then I'm sure you would feel safer in Panama City.
Of course, as I always advise people, being out at night alone is not a great idea in any of the capitals. Using common sense can dictate the "safeness" of a city.
