i heard this recently, and i was just interested in how much truth there was to it. i'd really like to see it and if it is going to be closed in the near future i'd like to plan a trip now
What's going on is that the government has put some laws allowing private investments close to the archeological sites. This made people fool enough not to understand that puting an hotel will translate into more tourists, therefore more job opportunities for them, let others brain-wash them telling that the ruins were in danger. This made everyone went out in a riot. The Cusco airport was closed and the trains to Machu Picchu were blocked, but the Ruins were not closed.
The government has "punish" the city of Cusco for these riots keeping it out as host to various international summits that are being held this year in Peru.
Of course, this has terribly damaged the image of Peru and it will take some time to make tourist recover the confidence that Machu Picchu is actually a safe place to come.
