I am currently working in Colombia, and love it.
I definitely feel safe here as the people, be it taxi drivers, shop keepers..., are always very courteous and friendly. I guess it's due to the few tourists that come here that results in "genuine" people.
I felt more unsafe in La Paz (Bolivia) (and was mugged there) and in certain places of Quito (Ecuador) than in Colombia! |

Columbia has some pretty dangerous areas but if you stick to places like the better parts of Bogota and Cartagena you should have a wonderful time. |

You know it's really sad to see some of the answers that are given here.
It is safe to travel to Colombia I am sure you are going to a City. I travel there every year and I am a US citizen. The guerilla is out in the mountains and jungles. I am sure you will have a great time just don't be to flashy. The media exagerates they portray all the bad things but some how the great things are not told. It is a beautiful country with amazing people If i could get a job out there I would live there in a heartbeat.
Have fun and good luck |

Just don't flaunt wealth or jewelry or anything like that. It's just like going to any big city...assuming you're going to a city. I've traveled throughout South America and I'm white. You'll be fine. |

I am going to Cali Colombia next month. Although I have never been there before, I am not expecting any major issues. I hear Cali is a great city to visit and I also hear the major cities are safe as long as you use common sense and don't travel into jungle areas where the gurellas are at. |

I went about 10 years ago when it was a lot safer than now and I must admit it was a scary experience. I went to visit my dad who lived there, and we went to Baranquilla in the north, a relatively small town. As I am white I would have 'Gringo!' (a derogatory term for North American) shouted at me in the street. If I explained I was English they were fascinated and lovely.
If you are of mixed race you'd blend in better and would probably feel safer, but if you are white or black you stand out like a sore thumb. If you go to the major cities, you'd probably need protection (my dad had full protection when he went to Medellin or Bogota), and it seems that the situation (like it's neighbour, Venezuela) is getting much worse.
I'm desperate to return to the area, but I'm leaving it for a few years in the hope that the political situation calms down significantly.
Good luck! |

well depends are you hiking in the Andes Mountain or going to the Amazon region ? is in the far jungle areas were the danger is but if you are going to the cities then there is nothing to worry about , i mean Colombian cities don't hold more danger than any other cities
Is common sense every city has bad parts , steer clear of them same way you would do in L.A , New York ,
I promese you will have a wonderful time , if you want more details specifics shoot me an email , I i live in Bogota, i will be happy to answer any question you have |
