What are you going to do when you get here?

Do you have the means of obtaining one?
They will let you come in, as a tourist, for 90 days, then what do you do?
You have to leave.
You can get a permanent residency visa if you want to put $300,000 in a Panama Bank. Or, you can get one if the Social Security is going to send you $1000 every month for the rest of your life. You might get a permanent residency visa by investing $80,000 in a Reforestation program.
Don't want to do that, can you find a job?
You can, if you can get a permit.
You can get a permit if a company will agree to give you a job and will file the paperwork for you. (Most won't, why should they when they can hire a Panamanian and don't have to pay the attorney $2500 for the filing.
Still, they might do that if you speak Spanish and if you will work for $500 a month, which is the average pay for most un-skilled, non-professional workers here.
So sure, ditch your miserable life there for "paradise" here but only if you can meet the requirements.

What do you consider family?
Your decision will depend on your answer. If you are young, almost independent (I mean you have a job) but living with your parents, I would suggest you should go for it. It's a beautiful place. |

If your family is your parents there's no reason - go for it!
If your family is a wife and kids, real men don't ditch their responsibilities. That's not to say you have to stay in a relationship, but you have to negotiate so your children aren't ditched, or they will bear the scars. And, I daresay you will, too. |
