I have been in Easter Island for ten days....and I must say that I walked all over the island and some of its underground tunnels several times.
It is a very interesting place if you like sociology, and you take some time to read the history from the place.
As a territory that belongs to Chili, I believe the best way to go is passing by Santiago de Chile, usually is necessary to overnight there, and then take a plane to Easter Island.
What can you see there?
1-the famous statues
2-more statues
3-some descendants of Polynesians looking like the statues
4-A seashore dark without a beach, but very pretty
5-The cannibal cave of the Bird men
6-The tunnels where the girls had to stay for a year to get as white as they could to be offer as a gift to the winner of the yearly competition of the Bird men;
7-Bird men painted in the cannibal cave.
8-Some natives with horses hanging around in the main city- watch out with the men over there, most of the time doing nothing but drinking or using drugs.
The three extinguished volcanoes that are forming the shape of the island. One of them with a beautiful lake inside.
9-Lousy food unless going to a Chilean hostel.
10-Visiting the places where the stones to build the big statues - always men watching to the see-where taken.
11-Dark grey volcanic rocks and a pretty wild light green Pacific Ocean.
12-A genuine Leprosarium that everybody hides. Only possible to go paying to any native with a horse. The sculptures from the leprous men and Napoleon, if still alive, showing the place and asking you to send medication to them.

Just a last advice, do not go for more than four days or you will end up screaming for an earlier flight!!!!!

It might be a better idea to make a trip to Tahiti stepping over Easter Island for 3 days - enough - without plain additional costs - you can check prices from Lan Chile or Air France. Remember that in Easter Island the official language is Spanish, and in Tahiti French.

You don't have to buy a ready made holiday. Put Chip Chile into your search engine for the Chilean information project to get some ideas, then book your flights, hotels and meet & greets.
LanChile is an excellent airline. If you like the look of a hotel on a site called 'gotolatin' you might be better off booking direct though.

Just fly there. Get surprised. You will love a non-planned trip to Easter Island.

If you intend to go to Rapa Nui you should go during the Tapati http://www.portalrapanui.cl/galeria/galeriatapati2.htm , that's the island festival. Its during the first two weeks of February.

Very detailed and complete. Rather expensive though.
