Jamaica or Costa Rica or what? |
Now I am planning a trip for 2 and don't know where to go! I hear about the crime in Jamaica, but I don't think Costa Rica has those clear blue water beaches. I am open to other places, but I'm kinda on a budget!!! Help?! |

Costa Rica is very beautiful and the water is clear it is the sand that is darker on the Pacific coast then makes the water look not as clear as the Caribean side.
In Jamaica you pretty much cannot leave the resort due to crime / violence. Costa Rica is the exact opposite which just about the same "street rules" as the States which basically is do not go where where you dont belong AND every city or town has a "bad" area that is to be avioded.
Costa Rica is cheaper and has many more activities. The National Parks are unbelievable as is the nightlife. The surfing is top notch and the fishing is world class. The people are "pro-American" or "pro-gringo" and they are also very helpful.
I would say you will get more "bang for your buck" in Costa Rica. |

Costa Rica has plenty of beautiful beaches. Also, on the southern Pacific side of the country, there is great surfing if you want to try. The rain forests in Costa Rica are also so beautiful. |

Jamaica is good but overall if your on a budget Costa Rica will be the better choice. That said Costa Rica, at least the popular places there are not a bargain and the nice restaurants are just about US prices or even more what I'm trying to say is I would have a much better time doing CR on the cheap than Jamaica. It will be safer and the people will be nicer (overall) Check out Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste for a nice clean beach |

Costa Rica is nicer than Jamacia... the beaches are beautiful and I thought nicer than Jamacia. You also have alot more to see in Costa Rica. Car rental is easy as well and you can drive around the country with ease. If you are lookin on a budget... go to Honduras... island of Utila is amazing and inexpensive. Have to fly into San Pedro Sula, bus to La Ceiba and take a boat to the island which makes for good stories always... but its well worth it. Great diving and snorkling. |

For a classic Caribbean beautiful beach experience where they tuck the locals away behind walls while you are protected in a beautiful resort, I would go with Jamaica.
Costa Rica is more for some one who wants to get a unique eco-tourism or cultural experience. The beaches are amazing and the nature is unbelievable.
On a budget, Costa Rica is the place to go. You do not need to get yourself caught up in tourist traps and over priced accomodations! |

Costa Rica does have nice clear water beaches like Jamaica. You can always go to Costa Rica now and travel to Jamaica once the crime is settled down a bit. |

I lived down in Costa Rica for 17 years. I guess I will put my two cents worth in and say it is safer than Jamaica. Leave your jewels at home and use common sense like locking your car door and not leaving anything inside your car like a purse in plain sight. Make copies of any documents that you travel with and leave it with a person in case you had something stolen. Everyone else gave you excellent websites. Most beaches are black sanded. I prefer Playa Hermosa but if you are looking for white sanded or light sanded beaches, then visit Playa Coyote or Playa Flamingo. Playa (Ply Ya pronounced like plywood which means beach.). Both are along the Pacific side and the first one may not have any hotels around still but it was gorgeous. The second one, Flamingo, has very nice and expensive hotels near the beach and it gets cheaper the further away from the beach. Another one to consider is Manual Antonio because it has 3 different small beaches and is in a national park. It has something for everyone and food, night life, and lots and lots of Gringos are in that town drinking at every hour. If you are a party hardy person, then go there or to Playa Jaco. Be extra careful in Playa Jaco because it offers great surfing and more riff raff type people are available. If you like light sanded beaches, consider Flamingo and passing by Coyote. If you want a nice beach overall, then Hermosa or Manual Antonio. Have a fun and safe trip. The people are very nice and friendly but just practice common sense security. |

Costa Rica! It is very safe and very beautiful. I've been multiple times and can't get enough. The beaches are fantastic (or at least the ones that I've been to. They also have hot springs and volcanoes and rain forests. It's a great place to visit. |

Costa Rica is the worst place. Full of dirty and poverty.
Costa Ricans are xenophobic mainly with europeans and americans.
I hope you change your idea and visit another country like Nicaragua.
